Okulu is the revered ancient ancestral egúngún of the Asunluwa Kingdom in IJANA, Okemesi-Ekiti, Ekiti State.
Unlike ordinary Egúngún Ènìyàn (human masquerades), Okulu is an Ebora—a living spirit with powers beyond the ordinary. According to tradition, before Okulu’s custodians from Ile Asunluwa/Asunlua can release him to the streets, they must give a two-week notice, “Itadogun,” with the consent of the Oba and traditional chiefs. This is due to Okulu’s supernatural abilities, capable of awe-inspiring feats.
For seven days leading up to his appearance, special rituals are performed to prepare for Okulu, allowing the people to witness his ekùú (sacred attire).
Okulu’s last parade was over 75 years ago; he does not appear often, and rain is said to fall on the day of his emergence.
In the 2021 Oladunwo Festival, Okulu returned to the streets, a truly awe-inspiring sight!
