The House of Representatives has advanced a bill to create an additional state, passing the second reading and moving closer to approval.
On Thursday, a bill proposing the establishment of Ogoja State successfully passed its second reading in the House of Representatives.
The bill, sponsored by Godwin Offiono and three others, was presented during the plenary session.
The proposed constitutional amendment aims to modify the 1999 Constitution by establishing a new state in the South-South region.
When presenting the motion, Mr. Offiono stated that “the foundation of this bill is built on fairness.”
If the bill becomes law, it would increase the number of states in the South-South region to seven.
The bill passed its second reading without any opposition from the members and was sent to the House Committee on Constitution Review.
