Economic Hardship: At least four persons killed, 44 arrested during youth rampage and mass looting of government warehouses, private shops in Adamawa State
At least four persons were reportedly killed during the youth rampage and looting of government warehouses in Adamawa State on Sunday.
It is reported that at about 8 am on Sunday, youths in their thousands attacked the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) warehouse at PZ Roundabout, adjacent to the Yola International Airport and carted away grains among other items.
Witnesses told Premium Times that the looters complained of hardship following the removal of subsidy on petrol and the high cost of foodstuffs.
SaharaReporters reported that over 200 tricycle vehicles loaded with grains and other items left the NEMA warehouse alone, on Sunday morning. It is reported that armed hoodlums took advantage of the situation to dispose residents of personal belongings, including cell phones. At least, four of the alleged looters were reportedly shot dead by security operatives during the rampage.
However, the spokesperson for Adamawa State police command, SP Suleiman Nguroje, said, “Presently, the joint security operatives had arrested 44 suspects from different locations across the state found demonstrating. Already investigation into the matter has commenced, recoveries had been made from the arrested miscreants.” He said those arrested for causing problems and looting will be charged with armed robbery.
