In an interview with Arise News, Tonye Ibraye, the 2023 Rivers State Governorship Candidate for the African Democratic Congress (ADC), voiced his concerns over the rising political unrest and contradictions surrounding the Rivers State local government elections. He sharply criticized the actions of certain political groups, accusing them of hypocrisy and fueling what he described as “political terrorism” and extremism in the state.
“The same people that were complaining before, that the local governments were led by unelected caretaker chairmen and they were protesting, are the same people that are coming today to protest against the conduct of elections,” Ibraye remarked. He highlighted the inconsistency in their stance, pointing out how those who initially protested the lack of elected leadership in local governments are now opposing the very election process meant to address the issue.
Ibraye went further to suggest that something more sinister is at play in the political landscape of Rivers State. “What I’m seeing is some sort of cult followership and political terrorism and extremism that is going on in Rivers State,” he said. His comments reflect a growing concern over the escalating tensions and violence in the lead-up to the local government elections, as political factions clash over control and power.
