With just over a month to go before Election Day, both Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump are intensifying their campaign efforts.
Their running mates will also face off in the first and only scheduled vice presidential debate of the 2024 election on Tuesday night.
On Monday, both candidates addressed Hurricane Helene, with Harris speaking from FEMA headquarters in Washington, D.C., and Trump delivering his remarks from Georgia. Notable quotes from each candidate highlighted their contrasting approaches to the crisis.
Trump attempted to politicize the disaster, stating, “Our country is in the final weeks of a hard-fought national election, but in a time like this, when a crisis hits, when our fellow citizens cry out in need, none of that matters.
We’re not talking about politics now.” He also made inaccurate claims about communications with Georgia’s Governor Brian Kemp, who refuted Trump’s statement.
In contrast, Harris focused on the human impact of the storm, saying, “The devastation from Hurricane Helene is immense. Millions of Americans are without power.
To everyone who has been impacted by this storm… our nation is with you.” Today, Trump is set to hold two campaign events in Wisconsin, while Harris will remain in Washington for briefings and meetings.
