Dr. Yemi Farounbi, a former Nigerian Ambassador to The Philippines, has shared his thoughts on the changing landscape of education in Nigeria. He recalls his youth fondly, remembering the excitement of competing in sports against schools like Government College, Umuahia, and Edo College, Benin.
In his time at secondary school in Ado Ekiti, Farounbi experienced a diverse environment with students from all over Nigeria, all striving to excel and contribute to the nation. He highlights the vibrant sense of unity and healthy competition present during his university years, especially at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN).
According to Nigerian Tribune, Farounbi emphasizes that he received his university scholarship based solely on his academic performance. He recalls, “As a Yoruba man in UNN, I earned the university scholarship on the basis of merit. Nobody called me names. If you did well and your cumulative average score justified it you got it.”
He expresses sadness and disappointment at the current state of educational opportunities in Nigeria, feeling that the sense of camaraderie and merit-based recognition has diminished. Farounbi’s reflections serve as a reminder of the importance of unity and excellence in education for the future of Nigeria.
