President-elect Donald Trump paid tribute to former President Jimmy Carter on Wednesday at the Capitol Rotunda, where Carter lies in state as part of his state funeral.
Trump is scheduled to meet with Senate Republicans later in the day to discuss advancing his agenda once he assumes office later this month. Carter, the 39th president of the United States, will be honored with a funeral service on Thursday at Washington National Cathedral, with President Joe Biden delivering the eulogy. Despite their history of mutual criticism, Trump has confirmed he will attend the funeral, describing Carter as a “good man.” However, Trump recently criticized Carter’s Panama Canal treaty, which transferred control of the canal to Panama, and expressed frustration over flags being flown at half-staff during his inauguration due to the 30-day mourning period.
Carter, who passed away on December 29 at the age of 100, was commemorated in his home state of Georgia before his remains were transported to Washington. His flag-draped casket was carried in a horse-drawn caisson down Pennsylvania Avenue, accompanied by members of his family. In the Capitol Rotunda, remarks were delivered by Republican Senate Majority Leader John Thune and House Speaker Mike Johnson. Vice President Kamala Harris also delivered a eulogy, highlighting Carter’s humanitarian efforts after leaving office.
“Jimmy Carter established a new model for what it means to be a former president and leaves an extraordinary post-presidential legacy,” Harris remarked.
