President Bola Tinubu has warmly congratulated six distinguished Nigerian scientists and engineers who were recently named among the 400 recipients of the prestigious Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE) in the United States.
The PECASE award, introduced in 1996 by former US President Bill Clinton, is the highest honour given by the US government to early-career scientists and engineers for their outstanding achievements. This yearโs recipients, announced on January 14, 2025, by President Joe Biden, were selected from 14 US government agencies for their groundbreaking contributions to science, technology, and engineering.
In a statement issued on Thursday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, President Tinubu lauded the honorees for their remarkable accomplishments and for enhancing Nigeriaโs international image.
The six Nigerians recognized are:
Azeez Butali, Gilbert Lilly Endowed Professor of Diagnostic Sciences, University of Iowa.
Ijeoma Opara, Associate Professor of Public Health (Social and Behavioral Sciences), Yale School of Public Health.
Oluwatomi Akindele, Postdoctoral Researcher, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.
Eno Ebong, Associate Professor of Chemical Engineering, Bioengineering, and Biology, Northeastern University.
Oluwasanmi Koyejo, Assistant Professor of Computer Science, Stanford University.
Abidemi Ajiboye, Executive Vice Chair, Department of Biomedical Engineering, Case Western Reserve University.
President Tinubu emphasized that these recognitions highlight Nigerians’ vast potential to excel on both domestic and global stages.
He expressed optimism that the honorees would apply their multidisciplinary expertise to support Nigeriaโs development initiatives under the Renewed Hope Agenda.
