Despite a court order issued on December 23, 2024, requiring the police to charge or release Nigerian singer Speed Darlington within 48 hours, he remains in custody.
On January 6, 2025, the court reiterated the order, directing his release to his counsel, Marshal Abubakar, but the police imposed new bail conditions, requiring a Grade Level 16 civil servant as a surety.
Efforts by his counsel to meet these conditions on January 7, 2025, were unsuccessful, as they were unable to reach the Deputy Inspector General of Police, DIG Dasuki Galadanchi. A letter was sent to DIG Galadanchi on January 8, 2025, urging compliance with the court order, with another visit scheduled for January 9.
Speed Darlington, who was arrested last November over allegations of defamation and cyberstalking against Burna Boy, has filed a N300 million lawsuit against the police for unlawful detention, with a hearing scheduled for January 13, 2025.
