The Sokoto State Government has expressed deep condolences and pledged support for victims of the devastating fire outbreak at the ‘Karar-‘Yan-Nika’ section of Kara Market in Sokoto.
The fire, which consumed over 50 shops, destroyed 132 grinding machines, and wiped out significant quantities of foodstuffs including rice, millet, and beans, has resulted in losses estimated at millions of naira.
Deputy Governor Alhaji Idris Gobir visited the scene to sympathize with the victims and announced the establishment of a committee to evaluate the damage and propose measures to prevent future incidents.
“The harmattan season, with its dry and windy conditions, increases the risk of fire outbreaks. Everyone must take necessary precautions,” Gobir advised. He reassured victims that the government would act swiftly upon receiving the committee’s recommendations.
The fire has heavily impacted both local and non-local traders, many of whom depend on the market for their livelihood.
Malam Yakubu Bello, Chairman of the Grinders Association, lamented the massive losses, stressing the vital role grinding machines play in the market’s operations. Similarly, Alhaji Bashar Nuhu, Chairman of the Youth Traders Association, expressed gratitude for the deputy governor’s visit, calling it a testament to the government’s commitment to its citizens.
The Sokoto State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) also took immediate action. Special Adviser Aminu Bodinga praised the government’s proactive approach, emphasizing the need for immediate relief efforts and long-term preventive strategies.
Accompanied by fellow adviser Bashir Muhammad, Bodinga underscored the importance of safeguarding local businesses to prevent future calamities.
The state government’s swift response demonstrates its dedication to supporting affected residents and ensuring the resilience of Sokoto’s economic hubs.
