The Rivers State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is engulfed in a power tussle following a recent court ruling that nullified its 2024 congresses. This decision has intensified the rivalry between factions loyal to the current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and those aligned with Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
On January 13, 2025, Justice Stephen Jumbo of the Rivers State High Court in Port Harcourt invalidated the PDP’s ward, local government, and state congresses conducted in July and August 2024. The court restrained the executives who emerged from these congresses, led by Aaron Chukwuemeka—a known ally of Wike—from functioning as party officials. This ruling was in response to a suit filed by party members Edwin Woko, Love Otuonye, and others, who argued that the congresses violated a prior court injunction issued on July 16, 2024, prohibiting such activities pending the resolution of the originating summons.
National Working Committee’s Stance
In compliance with the court’s decision, the PDP’s National Working Committee (NWC) has recognized Nname Robinson Ewor as the legitimate leader of the Rivers State Executive Committee. The NWC’s statement emphasized adherence to the rule of law and internal democracy, urging all party members to support the Ewor-led executive to maintain unity and stability within the party.
Tensions Escalate Over Secretariat Control
Following the court’s judgment, the Ewor-led faction, backed by Governor Fubara, moved to assume control of the PDP State Secretariat. This action was met with strong resistance from the Wike-aligned group, which issued warnings about potential consequences if their authority was challenged. The Wike faction’s spokesperson stated, “Any attempt to undermine our leadership will be met with decisive action. We will not tolerate any breach of our party’s integrity.”
The escalating conflict between these factions threatens the cohesion of the PDP in Rivers State. Political analysts express concern that the discord could undermine the party’s effectiveness in governance and its performance in upcoming elections. Dr. Emeka Nwanze, a political science lecturer at the University of Port Harcourt, noted, “Internal divisions of this nature can significantly weaken a party’s structure, making it vulnerable in the political arena.”
Calls for Reconciliation
Amid the rising tensions, there are growing calls from party elders and stakeholders for dialogue and reconciliation. Elder statesman Chief Obafemi Lawson urged both factions to prioritize the party’s unity over individual interests, stating, “The strength of the PDP lies in its unity. All parties involved must come to the table to resolve their differences amicably.”
The unfolding situation in Rivers State serves as a critical test for the PDP’s commitment to internal democracy and conflict resolution. How the party navigates this crisis will likely have lasting implications for its stability and influence in the region.
