The Delta State Police Command has concluded its investigation into the death of Mr. Okediachi Emeka, which occurred on November 14, 2024. Following allegations suggesting police involvement in his demise, the Commissioner of Police, CP Olufemi Abaniwonda, promptly ordered a thorough investigation to ascertain the truth and assured that any culpable officers would face justice.
An autopsy, a critical component of the investigation, was carried out on December 7, 2024, in the presence of family representatives and conducted by two pathologists, including one appointed by the family.
The findings of the autopsy, which have now been made public, reveal the following:
1. Cause of Death:
Primary Cause (1a): Hypertensive heart disease.
Contributing Factors (1b): Uncontrolled hypertension exacerbated by the presence of pharmacological agents identified in the toxicology report.
2. Toxicology Report Findings:
The toxicology analysis detected significant concentrations of hard drugs, including tramadol, morphine, opium, diazepam, amitriptyline, and ethyl alcohol, all of which contributed to his medical condition.
Key Conclusions:
The findings confirm that Mr. Okediachi Emeka’s death was due to pre-existing health conditions aggravated by substance abuse and not due to any actions by police officers.
Commissioner’s Advisory:
The Commissioner of Police, CP Olufemi Abaniwonda, emphasized the dangers of drug abuse, particularly among youths, citing this unfortunate case as a stark reminder. Parents, guardians, and young individuals are urged to stay away from hard drugs, which can lead to irreversible damage to health and untimely death.
The Command reiterates its commitment to transparency and justice while continuing to advocate for a drug-free society.
