MAKUENI COUNTY, KENYA β Investigations are underway after debris from space fell in southern Kenya around 3 p.m. on Monday.
Fragments of the space debris landed in a village in Makueni County, identified as a separation ring from a rocket, weighing over 1,000 pounds and measuring eight feet in diameter. A separation ring is a component of a spacecraft. According to NASA, “Rockets typically come in stages, with each stage designed for different parts of the launch. Once a stage completes its function, it detaches, allowing the remaining part of the rocket to continue its journey.”
By Tuesday morning, officials from the Kenya Space Agency, along with a multi-agency team, had secured the area and successfully recovered the debris.
“We want to reassure the public that the object poses no immediate threat to safety,” said the Kenya Space Agency in a statement released Wednesday. “Our experts will analyze the debris, identify its origin, and keep the public updated on the next steps and findings.”
The Kenya Space Agency emphasized that this incident is isolated and will be thoroughly investigated under international space law.
