Tension engulfed a part of Ado-Ekiti, the capital of Ekiti State, on Thursday, 9th January 2025, when men of the Oodua Peoples Congress (OPC) and commercial motorcycle riders engaged in a violent clash over the death of a motorcycle ticketing officer.
The clash occurred in the early hours of Thursday at the Atikankan area of the metropolis.
Members of the OPC and the commercial motorcyclists engaged one another with dangerous weapons such as cutlasses, knives, and others in the bout, which lasted for over two hours.
It was learnt that trouble started when the motorcycle riders accused the OPC men of being responsible for the death of the yet-to-be-identified ticketing officer, who was stationed at the OPC office near the area.
As of the time of filing the report, what led to the death of the victim and the number of people who sustained injuries during the clash could not be ascertained.
However, operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) of the state police command, drafted to the area to restore law and order, have arrested six suspects.
Speaking on the development, the Police Public Relations Officer of the command, SP Abutu Sunday, said that the command acted on a distress call from the area.
āToday, being 09/01/2025, at about 11:20hrs, the command received a distress call that some hoodlums were attacking and robbing innocent people in the Atikankan area of Ado-Ekiti.
āThe operatives of the RRS were deployed to the axis, where six of the suspects were arrested.
āThey are currently undergoing investigation. Efforts are underway to arrest other fleeing members of the gang.ā
