The Nigerian military is pursuing legal action against Reuters over a 2022 report alleging a secret forced abortion program targeting women impregnated by insurgents, claiming about 10,000 pregnancies were terminated.
The Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, highlighted that a 2024 investigation by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) cleared the military of any wrongdoing and criticised Reuters for failing to retract the allegations or apologise. General Musa expressed disappointment at the lack of accountability from Reuters and emphasised the damage caused to Nigeria’s reputation, adding that such reports appear aimed at undermining military progress.
The NHRC’s thorough investigation involved hearings in Abuja and Borno State, concluding that the claims were “unfounded and malicious.” The military continues to categorically deny the allegations, asserting that these accusations are part of efforts to demoralise troops combating Boko Haram insurgency in Nigeria.
