Lieutenant Commander Ekah of the Nigerian Navy Ship BEECROFT allegedly assaulted 18 junior personnel, including Ordinary Seaman KA Uzorh, on January 18, 2025, for arriving late to parade mustering.
Uzorh, who sustained serious injuries, is currently hospitalized due to the assault. Military sources criticized the excessive use of flogging as a punishment, calling it outdated and detrimental to morale, suggesting alternative corrective actions like counseling or extra duties.
They emphasized that the incident should be investigated to ensure discipline is maintained fairly and with respect for personnel’s dignity. Efforts to contact Lt. Cdr. Ekah for comment were unsuccessful, as his phone was switched off.
