James Howells has lost a long-running legal battle to recover a Bitcoin hard drive mistakenly thrown away by his ex-partner in 2013. The hard drive, now worth nearly £600m, was disposed of at a landfill in Newport, Wales, containing 1.4m tonnes of waste.
Howells had hoped to access the site with a team of experts and offered to share the recovered fortune with Newport Council. However, a judge ruled that there were no “reasonable grounds” for his claim, dismissing his attempt to sue the council for access or £495m in compensation.
Describing the decision as “a kick in the teeth,” Howells now faces the harsh reality of losing his Bitcoin fortune, which has been locked away in the dump for over a decade.
