Christ Mitots School in Ikorodu has come under intense scrutiny following the release of a video showing a teacher, Stella Nwadigo, assaulting a three-year-old pupil, Abayomi Michael. The footage, which went viral on social media, sparked outrage and calls for the teacher’s arrest, as well as demands for the Lagos State Government to shut down the school.
While opinions are divided on closing the school, the Lagos State Government has announced plans to assess the institution and make necessary recommendations.
Speaking on TV The Morning on Thursday, January 9, 2025, Titilola Vivour-Adeniyi, Executive Secretary of the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA), revealed that a task force had been deployed to investigate the school.
“We have a Lagos State Safeguarding and Child Protection Task Force, which includes representatives from various ministries such as the Ministry of Youth and Social Development, the Office of Education Quality Assurance, the Lagos State Safety Commission, the DSVA, Child Protection Network, and the police,” she explained.
According to Vivour-Adeniyi, the task force will assess the school’s compliance with safety and quality standards to ensure such incidents do not recur.
“The team will evaluate the school on various criteria. The Office of Education Quality Assurance will verify the school’s registration status, the Safety Commission will examine its safety measures, and the Ministry of Youth and Social Development will assess whether the incident impacted other students. Additionally, we will check if the school has implemented a safeguarding and child protection policy,” she added.
Vivour-Adeniyi warned that if the school is found to have violated Lagos State safety guidelines, the task force might recommend its closure.
“Last year, the task force inspected over 34 schools. Based on our findings, 12 schools were shut down due to safety violations. This is the highest level of recommendation we can make,” she noted.
The school has condemned Nwadigo’s actions and suspended her pending the outcome of the investigation. In a statement, the institution assured the public that it is cooperating fully with authorities and will ensure justice is served.
