The Lagos State government announced that the enforcement of the ban on Single-Use Plastics (SUPs) will begin in two weeks. Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, revealed this during an inspection of flood-prone areas and ongoing projects on Lagos Island, culminating at Ilubirin Waterfront.
Wahab had previously announced in December 2024 that the use of Styrofoam and other SUPs for packaging would be prohibited, with enforcement set to begin in January 2025. The state had banned Styrofoam in January 2024 due to the rising environmental impact of plastic waste.
Speaking to reporters at the Ilubirin Pump Station, Wahab emphasized the irreversible nature of the ban and noted a reduction in littering, particularly with Styrofoam, since enforcement efforts began. He also discussed ongoing infrastructure regeneration efforts, highlighting the importance of tackling human behavior that contributes to system degradation, and ensuring contractors are prepared for the project.
