Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to healthcare, announcing plans to begin the reconstruction of 200 Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) within 100 days.
Speaking on Sunday while welcoming Belgiumโs Revive Medical Team on their second medical mission to the state, Otti praised the team for fulfilling their promise of returning to Abia for another round of free medical outreach.
โI want to let you know that healthcare delivery is topmost on our agenda. While weโve made significant progress since 2023, thereโs still much room for improvement,โ Otti stated.
The governor revealed plans to launch the rehabilitation of 200 PHCs on Monday, with a prototype design that will set a new standard for healthcare facilities in Abia. He assured that once the first set of 200 centres is completed, another phase will commence, aiming to rehabilitate all 948 PHCs in the state.
Commissioner for Health, Professor Enoch Ogbonnaya, highlighted the alignment of the medical mission with the governorโs vision of delivering free, quality healthcare to residents. The team is expected to perform at least 100 surgeries and 1,000 consultations during the mission.
Dr. De Gazelle Herman, leader of the Revive Medical Team, expressed appreciation for the collaboration, citing the success of last yearโs outreach as a driving factor for their return. The mission will focus on surgeries for conditions like goiter and hernia, alongside other consultations.
The governor also assured that additional healthcare initiatives, including ongoing retrofitting at Abia State University Teaching Hospital, are part of his broader efforts to transform healthcare delivery in the state.
