Germany’s defence ministry announced on Wednesday its decision to suspend activities on the social media platform X, citing concerns over the platform’s role in spreading disinformation under its owner, Elon Musk.
The ministry stated that it would “no longer post proactively on the channel for the foreseeable future,” adding that “the fact-based exchange of arguments is becoming increasingly difficult” on the platform.
This move follows similar decisions by several public institutions in Germany to either limit or cease their activities on X.
Last week, over 60 German universities collectively announced their departure from the platform, arguing that its “current direction is incompatible with the basic values of openness, scientific integrity, transparency, and democratic discourse.”
Despite halting regular posts, the defence ministry clarified that it “reserves the right to respond on X in exceptional cases, such as addressing disinformation.”
Looking forward, the ministry plans to use WhatsApp, owned by Meta, as an alternative channel for proactive information sharing.
