Edo Governorship: Ighodalo Condemns Intimidation, Reaffirms Judiciary Confidence
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate in the recent Edo governorship election, Asue Ighodalo, has decried acts of violence and harassment allegedly aimed at derailing the legal process to reclaim his mandate.
Speaking to reporters outside the courthouse on Wednesday, Ighodalo expressed gratitude to Edo voters and reiterated his confidence in the judiciary as the tribunal deliberates on the disputed September 2024 election.
“We strongly believe the judiciary will deliver justice. Our focus remains reclaiming our mandate and advancing the welfare of Edo State’s people. We will eradicate poverty, eliminate fear, and unlock the state’s potential,” Ighodalo stated.
He also addressed reports of violent incidents, including a masked gunman spotted outside the courthouse, describing them as deliberate distractions. “These acts of intimidation are meant to divert our attention, but we remain resolute,” he added.
Tensions escalated further when the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) raided a Benin hotel where PDP witnesses were allegedly housed. While the EFCC confirmed the operation, it denied any political motives.
Dr. Anthony Aziegbemi, Chairman of the PDP’s Edo Caretaker Committee, accused the APC of orchestrating intimidation tactics. “Deploying thugs disguised as PDP supporters and using state agencies like the EFCC is a desperate and unacceptable strategy,” Aziegbemi claimed.
Ighodalo assured supporters of his commitment to the tribunal process, expressing optimism that justice would prevail for himself and his deputy, Osarodion Ogie.
