Families of victims killed during the #EndBadGovernance protests held a press conference in Kano, urging the government to accept responsibility, provide justice, and offer compensation for lives lost due to alleged police brutality.
Organized by the Victims Support Initiative Nigeria (VSIN), bereaved parents shared heartbreaking stories, including Yahya Ibrahim, whose 5-year-old son was killed by a stray bullet in their compound.
Security forces, including the DSS, have been cracking down on journalists covering the press conference and seeking information on the organizers and parents involved. Amnesty International and the National Human Rights Commission reported excessive use of force during the August 2024 protests, with at least 24 people killed, prompting human rights activist Omoyele Sowore to condemn police double standards in addressing these reports.
The families and VSIN continue to demand independent inquiries, accountability for officers, and financial compensation for victims, emphasizing the need to prevent such tragedies in the future.
