The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) has pledged to continue its opposition to the federal government’s tax reform bills currently before the National Assembly, demanding the suspension or withdrawal of the proposed legislation.
Aliyu Charanchi, the National Coordinator of CNG, made this statement during a town hall meeting in Damaturu with student leaders, Civil Society Organizations, and other stakeholders. The event, themed “Tax Reform Bill: A Catalyst for Economic Growth or a Burden on the People?”, addressed concerns over the bill’s unclear provisions.
Charanchi questioned the rationale behind the bill, asking, “What problems is the Nigerian government addressing, and why must the solution be found solely through this tax reform? Will this bill alleviate the suffering of Nigerians?”
He called for a suspension of the bill and broader consultation with the public. Charanchi warned National Assembly members that failure to act on this issue could lead to their removal in the 2027 elections. He emphasized that CNG would continue campaigning against the bill until the right course of action is taken.
