Residents of Ifa Ikot Okpon in Uyo LGA, Akwa Ibom State, were displaced after the state government demolished over 100 houses, affecting 182 people from 52 families. Victims allege they were not compensated or notified before the demolitions, despite earlier promises.
The demolished properties reportedly sit on land marked for a judges’ estate, though the community insists the land was never acquired by the government. The village head and affected residents have filed a court case demanding N600m in damages and a declaration that the land belongs to the community.
The case is set for hearing on February 11, 2025. Meanwhile, the victims appeal to the government for intervention and compensation.
