As the height of festive season draws nearer, with numerous events, funfairs, and gatherings planned across Ondo State, the Special Assistant to the Governor on Emergency Response, Hon. (Prince ) Wellington Oriade Adebawo, has tasked event planners in the state to prioritize safety and effective crowd management.
According to Hon. Adebawo, the recent incident at the Ibadan Christmas Funfair, where a stampede resulted in injuries and loss of lives, serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by overcrowding, inadequate security arrangements, and poor event planning.
The Special Assistant to the Governor on Emergency Response stated that event organizers must take every precaution necessary to prevent such tragedies from occurring in Ondo State. He emphasized that safety must never be compromised for the sake of celebration, and that a well-planned event is not just about entertainment but also about safeguarding the lives of those in attendance.
He also noted that the Ondo State Government is committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of its citizens, particularly during the festive season. He urged event planners to work closely with the relevant authorities, including the police, fire service, and emergency management agencies, to ensure that all necessary safety measures are in place.
Hon. Adebawo further advised event organizers to conduct thorough risk assessments, develop contingency plans, and provide adequate training for their staff and volunteers, emphasizing the importance of providing clear instructions and guidelines to attendees, as well as ensuring that all events are properly insured.
He warned that any event organizer found to be negligent or reckless in their planning and execution of events would face the full wrath of the law. He stated that the Ondo State Government would not tolerate any actions or omissions that could put the lives of its citizens at risk.
Hon. Adebawo appealed to the general public to be vigilant and report any suspicious activities or concerns to the relevant authorities. He also urged attendees at events to follow all instructions and guidelines provided by event organizers and security personnel.
He noted that in case of any emergency or concern, members of the public can reach out to the Office of the Special Assistant to the Governor on Emergency Response on 08131891026 or 09021044441.
