The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has delivered a scathing rebuke to former Rivers State Governor, Celestine Omehia, and ex-Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Chairman, Uche Secondus. Wike’s comments came during the Ahoada East and Ahoada West PDP end-of-year thanksgiving event in Ochigba, Ahoada East Local Government Area of Rivers State.
Omehia Under Fire
Wike reacted strongly to Omehia’s remarks, which questioned his contributions to Rivers State as FCT Minister. He clarified that his primary responsibility lies in Abuja but highlighted his notable achievements during his time as Minister of Education.
“I overheard Celestine Omehia asking what I have done for Rivers State as Minister. Let me educate him: I am the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, not Rivers State,” Wike stated.
He detailed his past contributions to the state, including establishing a Faculty of Law at the University of Port Harcourt, funding Ken Saro-Wiwa Polytechnic, and renovating Federal Government College, Port Harcourt.
Secondus’ Alleged Hypocrisy
Turning to Uche Secondus, Wike dismissed his criticism, accusing him of hypocrisy. Wike alleged that Secondus had previously tried to impose his cousin, Tele Ikuru, as Rivers State governor and worked against the emergence of Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
“Secondus now claims to be Fubara’s ally while calling me an enemy of the state. The records are clear: I removed him as PDP chairman for his actions,” Wike remarked.
Political Appointments and Projects
Wike also defended his legacy, pointing to the significant political appointments secured for Rivers State under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
“There is no governor in Rivers’ history that has attracted more political appointments than me,” Wike declared, emphasizing that Rivers State has the highest number of federal appointees in Tinubu’s government.
He noted that many of the projects being commissioned in Rivers were initiated and partially funded during his tenure as governor, including the ambitious Ring Road project.
“I paid 50% for these projects to ensure continuity, but I’m disappointed that some have been canceled,” he added.
Support from Nwuche
Former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Prince Chibudum Nwuche, lauded Wike for his transformative efforts in Rivers State and Abuja.
“Wike has proven that his achievements in Rivers were no fluke. Abuja is now being transformed into a world-class city under his leadership,” Nwuche said.
The fiery exchange highlights lingering political tensions in Rivers State as Wike continues to defend his legacy amid criticism from notable figures in his political circle.
