Omoyele Sowore, the 2023 presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), has criticized Peter Obi for visiting Afe Babalola to “beg” in connection with the ongoing case against human rights activist and lawyer Dele Farotimi. Farotimi is facing criminal defamation and cybercrime charges in both the Ekiti State Magistrates’ Court and the Federal High Court in Ado Ekiti.
Moses Paul, a social activist, shared that Obi traveled from Lagos to Ekiti State to meet Afe Babalola at his office in Afe Babalola University, where they discussed key issues, including Farotimi’s case. Following the meeting, Obi visited the prison where Farotimi is being held and expressed his solidarity.
In response, Sowore condemned Obi’s actions in a post on his X handle, accusing him of seeking forgiveness for Farotimi’s detention. He described Obi’s visit as a betrayal of the fight against judicial corruption, comparing it to forcing Rosa Parks to give up her seat during the Civil Rights Movement. Sowore emphasized that the struggle for justice continues.
On Monday, Farotimi was granted bail by the Federal High Court in Ado Ekiti in a case filed by the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, over alleged cybercrime.
