President-elect Donald Trump announced on Monday that he will travel to Paris on Saturday to attend the reopening of Notre Dame Cathedral, marking his first international trip since securing re-election last month.
Trump shared the news on his Truth Social platform, calling the event an βhonorβ and praising the full restoration of the iconic landmark, which had been closed since a devastating fire in April 2019. Trump, who was president at the time of the fire, described Notre Dame as “one of the great treasures of the world” and noted its cultural and historical significance.
The reopening ceremony for the 12th-century cathedral includes a service led by the Archbishop of Paris on Saturday, followed by an inaugural mass on Sunday with nearly 170 bishops from around the globe.
Trump commended French President Emmanuel Macron for overseeing the restoration and ensuring that the cathedral is returned to its βfull level of glory, and even more so.β
This announcement comes shortly after Trump nominated Charles Kushner, his daughterβs father-in-law, as the U.S. ambassador to France, signaling a renewed focus on U.S.-France relations.
