Reactions have been pouring in following the announcement that Peter Obi, the former Labour Party presidential candidate, has offered to take on the N30 million bail conditions for Dele Farotimi, a human rights lawyer currently detained over defamation charges.
Omoyele Sowore, a human rights activist and 2023 presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), has been vocal in his criticism of Obi’s move.
Sowore believes that Obi’s intervention has only led to further delay in Farotimi’s release, with the court adjourning the bail application to December 20.
Sowore’s criticism stems from his perception that Obi’s actions undermine the fight against systemic judicial oppression. He argues that Obi’s actions have only resulted in 10 more days of detention for Farotimi.
The development has sparked a heated debate about the most effective way to secure Farotimi’s release and challenge the judicial system.
