The Ogun State Police Command has addressed allegations circulating on social media that officers from the Sango Police Division demanded N40,000 from a complainant to report a kidnapping case involving a 7-year-old girl, Mercy Akande.
An X-user claimed the child was abducted by a customer at her mother’s PoS shop in Sango Ota, and the police allegedly requested N10,000 to file the report and an additional N30,000 to track the suspect’s phone number.
In response, the Command’s spokesperson, SP Omolola Odutola, issued a statement denying the allegations. She clarified that the reports were misleading and based on unverified information from social media.
“The Ogun State Police Command acknowledges a misleading report regarding an alleged demand for forty thousand naira from a complainant by officers of the Sango Division. Contrary to the allegations, no such demand was made,” the statement read.
However, SP Odutola admitted that the officer who received the complaint failed to escalate the matter to the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), as required. She confirmed that disciplinary action has been taken against the officer for this lapse.
The Command assured the public that the DPO has since contacted the victim’s family and valuable information has been gathered. Efforts are underway to locate the kidnappers and rescue Mercy Akande unharmed.
