The Nigerian House of Representatives has revealed its intention to allocate ₦704.91 million on December 31, 2024, aimed at supporting vulnerable citizens affected by the economic repercussions of the petrol subsidy removal.
This initiative stems from a resolution passed on July 18, 2024, in which lawmakers agreed to a temporary 50% salary reduction for six months.
The decision was prompted by a motion introduced by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu during a plenary session, emphasizing the need to address public discontent and ongoing protests related to economic difficulties and governance issues.
Kalu urged his colleagues to make this sacrifice, noting that while the government is making efforts, a year is insufficient to resolve the country’s challenges.
Speaker Tajudeen Abba later confirmed that the contributions from lawmakers have totaled N704,907,578.82, and he will personally lead a delegation to present the funds to the President for the benefit of those in need.
