Phrank Shaibu, the Special Assistant on Public Communication to Atiku Abubakar, has urged the federal government to carefully evaluate its relationship with France.
According to DAILY POST, France is currently facing a diplomatic crisis in Africa, particularly in West Africa, where it has historically exerted significant control over its former colonies.
In a statement released on Thursday, Shaibu emphasized the need for vigilance in this relationship, asserting that it must be grounded in a steadfast commitment to Nigeria’s sovereignty, dignity, and leadership within the African continent.
He remarked, “While the reasons behind this emerging partnership are still uncertain, it is evident that France’s interest in Nigeria is not driven by altruism. Rather, it stems from a desire for self-preservation and a desperate effort to retain influence in a region that has become increasingly resistant to its strategies.”
Shaibu highlighted the critical nature of the situation for Nigeria, stating that any collaboration with France should be examined through the prism of national interest and historical context. He cautioned that the administration of President Bola Tinubu must proceed with caution, as Nigeria cannot afford to be a mere stepping stone for France’s resurgence in West Africa, nor should it allow itself to be coerced into a subordinate position in a relationship historically characterized by exploitation.
He reiterated, “The relationship with France must be approached with vigilance and a steadfast commitment to Nigeria’s sovereignty, dignity, and leadership in Africa. The pressing question is not only the direction of this alliance but also whether it is worth the potential costs to Nigeria. Only time will reveal if this partnership will advance Nigeria’s interests or reduce the nation to yet another pawn in France’s unyielding pursuit of dominance in Africa.”
