The Lawmaker representing Borno South in the Senate, Ali Ndume, has shared a video of long queues of Nigerians waiting for palliatives at President Bola Tinubu’s Lagos residence on Christmas Eve.
The lawmaker posted the video on his X account on Wednesday, December 25.
“Queues for presidential handouts at Bourdillon on Christmas Eve highlight a sobering reality. Poverty is a universal challenge that demands collective action and sustainable solutions,” Mr. Ndume wrote.
The senator’s comment comes on the heels of three deadly stampedes during palliative distributions in Oyo, Anambra, and the Federal Capital Territory, resulting in the loss of at least 60 lives.
Mr Ndume’s statement aims to highlight the growing poverty in the South, challenging the perception that poverty is predominantly a Northern issue.
It should be noted that poverty across various parts of the country has sharply risen since the president took office on May 29, 2024, which many attributes to the administration’s economic policies.
