The Nigerian Navy is making strides in local shipbuilding, with Chief of Naval Staff Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla asserting that they possess the capacity to construct world-class vessels. During a recent visit to the Naval Shipyard in Port Harcourt, he highlighted the completion of three standard warships and the ongoing construction of two Civil Defence Boats in Lagos.
Admiral Ogalla emphasized the need for greater public awareness about the Navy’s capabilities, noting that many still opt to purchase ships abroad due to a lack of knowledge about local options. He called for enhanced publicity to showcase their achievements and encourage domestic procurement.
The Navy aims to boost its local shipbuilding capacity significantly by 2030, targeting at least 60% of its vessels to be built locally as part of a strategic plan. This initiative not only aims to reduce reliance on foreign imports but also contributes to the nation’s economic growth by tapping into the blue economy.
