“On the eve of August 17, 2003, before my take-off flight from Paris Charles De Gaulle airport to Mutalla Mohammed Airport, Lagos, where I will sign a record deal with Question Mark Records.
I was very happy and curious at the same time. It would be my first time in Nigeria my motherland and my ancestral roots.
While waiting for flight time at the airport, my mother told me she knew I was naive about how love stories go in Nigeria. I should be very careful because it is very easy to love someone coming in from Overseas in Nigeria, but there is a problem finding love if you have been living in Nigeria.
I told her I didn’t understand and she said to me “You will understand when you get home…Just shine your eyes”
I finally arrived in Lagos, On my third night, I took myself out to a classy bar in Lekki to feel the energy of the famous city.
I sat at the bar all alone and ordered a glass of Lemonade as I listened to the cool Fela songs being played.
The barman got into a conversation with me; everything was going easy until he noticed I had just come in from France; he changed in a few seconds and started being all nice and romantic; as a woman, I could see his moves but just acted like I didn’t notice.
Right there my mama’s words began playing in my head.
“MY MAMA SAY BABY BE CAREFUL, IF ANYBODY COMES TO SAY I LOVE YOU”
