A military helicopter made an emergency landing at Camp Pendleton on Friday, and flames were visible at the site. This prompted police to warn drivers of possible delays along Interstate 5.
All four crew members escaped unharmed, according to James Estillore, spokesperson for the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing Communication Strategy and Operations. Estillore stated that the incident occurred shortly after 4 p.m. local time when a U.S. Marine Corps CH-53E Super Stallion experienced an engine fire in-flight.
The aircrew implemented emergency procedures and safely landed the helicopter at a designated landing zone. The California Highway Patrol reported that the aircraft came down near the northbound side of the freeway, close to the Aliso Creek Rest Area.
Authorities, including local and Marine Corps emergency responders, arrived to extinguish the fire. Motorists in the area were advised to exercise caution and anticipate traffic delays.
Camp Pendleton, located in San Diego County, serves as the primary West Coast base for the Marine Corps.
