To reduce the Japa syndrome, a Nigerian lecturer highlights the need for curriculum changes and improved local opportunities.
Dr. Bisi Olawuyi, a lecturer in the Department of Communication and Language Arts at the University of Ibadan, has urged the Federal Government to promptly reassess the nation’s educational curriculum.
He emphasized that such a review is essential to address the growing issue of Japa syndrome among Nigerian youth.
Speaking to journalists during the ‘Superbowl’ oratory competition at the university, which attracted participants from various tertiary institutions, Olawuyi highlighted that the current curriculum fails to confront the pressing challenges facing the country.
He expressed concern over the significant emigration of young people seeking better opportunities abroad, asserting that Nigeria possesses the potential to thrive.
He called for governmental action to align the curriculum with the country’s needs and encouraged the youth to maintain hope in their homeland, stressing the importance of developing leadership skills through initiatives like the oratory competition.
