An Islamic group has postponed the launch of a Sharia court in Oyo State, citing unforeseen circumstances.
The Supreme Council for Shari’ah in Nigeria has indefinitely postponed the inauguration of a Sharia Court of Law in Oyo State due to extensive online backlash.
Imam Daud Igi Ogun, the Khadimul Muslimeen of Oyo Kingdom, issued a statement on Tuesday confirming that the event, originally set for January 11, 2025, will not proceed as scheduled.
The announcement follows considerable public outcry on social media, where many Nigerians voiced their apprehensions regarding the court’s establishment in a state characterized by its multi-religious and culturally diverse population.
The group emphasized that the inauguration ceremony, planned to take place at the Muslim Community Islamic Center in Oyo, has been suspended until further notice, reiterating that Islam embodies peace.
The initial promotional material for the court had gone viral, inciting significant controversy, particularly among residents of the southern region who argued against applying northern measures in their area.
