Kemi Badenoch stands firm on her comments regarding Nigeria’s security situation, responding to Vice President Kashim Shettima’s criticism, and reaffirming her stance on the challenges facing the nation.
The leader of the Conservative Party in the United Kingdom, Kemi Badenoch, has responded to Nigeria’s Vice President, Kashim Shettima, affirming her commitment to her previous statements regarding Nigeria, despite facing accusations of disparaging the nation.
Badenoch has reportedly characterized her childhood in Nigeria as marked by fear and insecurity, attributing these feelings to the pervasive corruption within the country.
Born in the UK in 1980 to parents of Nigerian Yoruba descent, she is married to Scottish banker Hamish Badenoch, adopting his surname.
Prior to her election as leader of the Conservative Party, Badenoch referred to Nigeria as a socialist state rife with corrupt politicians and insecurity.
“This is my country. I do not wish for it to resemble the place I fled from. My upbringing in Nigeria allowed me to witness firsthand the consequences of self-serving politicians, who treat public funds as their personal resources, thereby tainting the political landscape with their inability to serve the populace.
“I have witnessed the realities of socialism for millions. I have seen poverty and shattered aspirations. I came to Britain to forge my path in a nation where diligence and integrity can lead to success.
“My childhood was filled with an omnipresent sense of fear. One cannot truly grasp it without experiencing it. Constantly ensuring that all doors and windows are secured, waking in the night at every noise, hearing neighbors cry out as they are victimized, and wondering if my home would be next,” she stated.
Reports indicate that Vice President Shettima responded on Monday, accusing Badenoch of belittling Nigeria.
Shettima suggested that Badenoch should drop the “Kemi” from her name if she harbors no pride in her country of origin.
In response to Shettima’s remarks, Badenoch, through her spokesperson, reiterated her support for her statements and expressed no desire to engage in public relations for Nigeria.
“She is the leader of the opposition and takes great pride in her role as such in this country.”
The spokesperson stated, “She speaks honestly and directly. She does not soften her language, and she remains steadfast in her assertions.”
