TrĂŁgedy struck in Ibadan as a stâmpede incident occurred at a funfair event organized by the Ooni’s ex-queen, Prophetess Naomi Silekunola, and an Ibadan-based broadcaster, Oriyomi Hamzat. The event, which was initially planned for 5,000 children, saw over 7,500 children in attendance, leading to a châotic situation that resulted in the deaths of 35 children.
The Ooni’s ex-queen and two others were arrested and charged in connection with the incident. On Tuesday, December 24, they appeared in court, facing a four-count charge. The Chief Magistrate Court 1, Iyaganku, Ibadan, ordered their remand.
Prophetess Naomi Silekunola was hospitalized after còllapsing on Friday, reportedly due to the stress and trauma of the incident . The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has taken charge of the investigations into the tragic incident.
The Ibadan funfair trágedy has sparked widespread outrage and calls for accountability. Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has canceled his birthday celebrations in honor of the victims, describing the incident as “páinful, unfọ̄rtunate, and preventable”.
