NNPCL reveals significant updates on the Port Harcourt Refinery, highlighting steps toward its completion and impact on Nigeria’s energy sector.
The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has reported that the new Port Harcourt Refinery is now over 90% complete.
This update was provided by Mele Kyari, the Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPCL, during a visit from representatives of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) to the facility located in Rivers State.
The Port Harcourt Refining Company (PHRC) operates two refineries: the existing plant with a capacity of 60,000 barrels per stream day (bpsd) and the new facility, which boasts a capacity of 150,000 bpsd, resulting in a total crude processing capacity of 210,000 bpsd.
Kyari, represented by NNPC’s Executive Vice-President (Downstream), Isyaku Abdullahi, indicated that the new refinery is in the rehabilitation phase and will soon commence operations.
This rehabilitation is anticipated to significantly boost Nigeria’s refining capacity and lessen the nation’s dependence on imported petroleum products. He emphasized that upon completion, the refinery will meet international standards in health and safety compliance.
The contractor, Tecnimont SPA, has reported that the project is over 90% complete, and NNPCL is committed to ensuring value from this investment.
Once operational, the refinery is expected to enhance local sufficiency, facilitate exports, and meet domestic consumption needs for petroleum products, particularly petrol.
