Femi Falana appeals to the Nigerian government to compensate families of victims who lost their lives in tragic stampedes.
Human rights advocate and attorney Femi Falana has called on the Federal Government to provide compensation to the families affected by the recent stampedes across the nation.
He made this appeal on Friday in Akure during an event organized by the Ondo State Government, known as the Akeredolu Leadership Lecture Series, in memory of the late governor.
Falana attributed the stampedes in Ibadan, Anambra, and Abuja, which resulted in over 65 fatalities during the distribution of palliatives, to the negligence of the Nigeria Police, who he claimed failed to ensure adequate security at these gatherings.
He emphasized that the loss of life was a result of security failures rather than poverty, asserting that the police are responsible for maintaining safety during public events.
Furthermore, Falana praised Ondo State for its commitment to peace, highlighting the establishment of the Ondo State Security Network, known as Amotekun, under Akeredolu’s leadership.
