Suspended Edo LG chairmen have been invited by the EFCC for questioning over claims of misconduct and alleged financial malpractices.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has called the suspended chairmen of the 18 local governments in Edo State for interrogation.
This action follows their suspension by the state House of Assembly on December 17, 2024, due to allegations of insubordination and misconduct.
EFCC’s Director of Investigation, Abdulkarim Chukkol, indicated that the chairmen from Akoko-Edo, Egor, Esan Central, Esan North East, Esan South East, and Esan West are required to appear at the commission’s office today, December 19, 2024, while the remaining chairmen from Igueben, Ikpoba Okha, Orhionmwon, Ovia North East, Ovia South West, Owan East, Owan West, and Uhunmwode are expected on December 20, 2024.
The EFCC has instructed the chairmen to bring certified true copies of documentation regarding staff strength and payroll, account details for salary payments, and account statements from January 1 to the present, in accordance with Section 38(1);(2) of the EFCC (Establishment) Act, 2004.
In response, the suspended chairmen have challenged Governor Monday Okpebholo and the state House of Assembly, asserting that their suspension is unconstitutional and citing a court order that protects their tenure until 2025, which prevents the dissolution of the democratically elected council executives.
