Human rights activist Omoyele Sowore has criticized the trial of lawyer Dele Farotimi in Ekiti State for alleged criminal defamation, asserting that it is a Northern Nigerian law not applicable in the South, where many states have removed it. Farotimi, who pleaded not guilty to 14 charges in court, remains in custody, with his bail ruling adjourned to December 20, 2024, despite public outcry.
Sowore highlighted that criminal defamation and civil libel suits are often used to suppress activists and dissenting voices. Calls for Farotimi’s release have intensified nationwide as his legal team challenges the charges in court.
