BANGKOK β China unveiled its latest amphibious assault ship, the Sichuan, on Friday, marking a significant advancement in the country’s naval capabilities.
This 40,000-ton vessel is the first of its kind, equipped with an electromagnetic catapult, enabling it to launch fighter jets directly from its deck. The Sichuan is designed to support military operations by deploying ground troops in landing crafts while also providing air support.
The ship features advanced technologies, including arrestor gear to safely land fighter jets, and is set to undergo additional testing, including sea trials. This new addition strengthens the Peopleβs Liberation Army Navyβs (PLAN) growing ability to operate beyond its immediate coastal waters.
China’s first amphibious assault ships, the Type 075, were launched in 2019, and the Sichuan is considered by experts as a “light aircraft carrier.”
As China continues to modernize its fleet, researchers also note the country is working on a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier for longer global deployments.
The U.S. currently operates 11 nuclear-powered carriers, maintaining a strong global presence, particularly in the Asia-Pacific region.
