Bello El-Rufai labels yearly budget allocations for vehicles, computers, and utensils as wasteful. Is it time for fiscal reform?
Bello El-Rufai, representing Kaduna North in the House of Representatives, has voiced his concerns regarding what he describes as excessive and wasteful spending in the proposed national budget for 2025.
During a session of the National Assembly on Thursday, he criticized the annual budget allocations for items such as vehicles, computers, and utensils by various Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs), arguing that these expenditures are unnecessary.
He emphasized the need to reassess these allocations, stating that the continuous budgeting for vehicles and other items that do not require frequent replacement is unsustainable and diverts attention from projects that would genuinely benefit citizens and enhance public services.
El-Rufai urged his colleagues to scrutinize the budgets of these ministries, suggesting that if vehicles were purchased in the previous year, there should be no need for additional allocations in the current budget cycle.
He expressed his belief that addressing these issues is crucial for identifying and closing financial loopholes, while also calling for a more responsible approach to budgeting that reflects the sacrifices expected of the Nigerian populace.
