Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar advises the military to reflect on past tragedies after the Sokoto airstrike. Full details here.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has denounced the accidental bombing by the Nigerian Air Force on December 25, which reportedly led to the deaths of ten individuals in the Rumtuwa and Gidan Sama communities of Sokoto State.
According to Peoplesmind, these villages, situated near the Surame desert—a known refuge for the Lakurawa terror group—experienced severe devastation from the airstrike.
In a statement on X, Atiku characterized the incident as “an outrage that must be condemned in the strongest terms,” and he raised concerns about the lessons learned from previous incidents, specifically referencing the December 3, 2023 airstrike on a religious gathering in Tudun Biri, near Kaduna, which resulted in numerous civilian casualties.
He stressed the importance of precision and accurate intelligence in counter-terrorism efforts, asserting that “the indiscriminate killing of innocent citizens can never be justified.” Atiku called for an end to the “tragic cycle of death” and urged the government to reflect on past errors.
He also expressed his condolences to the bereaved families and the people of Sokoto, wishing for the eternal peace of the departed souls.
