SAO PAULO, BRAZIL — A woman’s body has been recovered after a bridge collapsed in northern Brazil, raising the death toll to nine.
The Brazilian navy reported on Friday that the body was found 3.7 miles from the Juscelino Kubitschek de Oliveira Bridge. Authorities continue to search for eight others still missing.
The collapse occurred on Sunday when part of the bridge gave way, sending several vehicles, including four trucks, two cars, and two motorcycles, into the Tocantins River. The incident happened at the border between the northern states of Maranhao and Tocantins.
The 1,748-foot-long bridge, which connects the cities of Estreito and Aguiarnopolis, was built in the 1960s and is located about 800 miles north of Brasilia.
