Operatives of the Anambra State Police Command have apprehended an 18-year-old man, Miracle Mwakalor, during a crackdown on a suspected criminal gang in Awka South Local Government Area.
The arrest, confirmed by the state’s Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ikenga Tochukwu, occurred on Friday when the Special Anti-Cultism Squad (SACS) Enugu-Ukwu raided the gang’s hideout following credible intelligence.
According to the police statement released on Saturday, the gang was reportedly holding a meeting to plan an attack in Nibo, a community already reeling from a brutal massacre of ten young men by unknown assailants on October 20. The tragedy left the community in shock, and authorities are intensifying efforts to curb further violence.
During the raid, Miracle Mwakalor, a native of Umubele in Awka South, was captured while his accomplices managed to flee. The operation also led to the recovery of an AK-47 rifle and a magazine concealed in the roof of an apartment in Ubuofu, Awka, as revealed by the suspect during interrogation.
“The suspect confessed to the crime and provided critical information, leading to the recovery of the firearm,” SP Tochukwu disclosed. “Efforts are underway to apprehend the fleeing gang members, and further updates will be communicated in due course.”
The police have called on residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities as they intensify their fight against criminal elements in the region.
